How to Make an Ottoman Out of a Coffee Table

The ability to refurbish and repurpose furniture is both a cost-effective and eco friendly skill. Turning an old door into a dining room table, transforming a dresser into a credenza or making an ottoman out of a coffee table are simple projects. Find an old coffee table that is a suitable size for your ottoman. Thrift stores and yard sales can be gold mines for projects like this one and you're likely to only pay a few dollars for the coffee table. If the table has a glass top, remove the glass and replace it with a piece of plywood. Take the dimensions of the glass, including thickness, to your local home supply store and they will cut the plywood to size for you. You can find the remaining supplies at a fabric store or discount store.

Cut a piece of foam to fit the top of the coffee table with an electric knife. Regular craft knives or scissors do not work as well on foam as an electric knife. Spray the top of the coffee table with adhesive and press the foam firmly to the table top.

Cut a piece of batting and a piece of fabric large enough to cover the top of the table, then add 8 inches to the length and the width to account for the sides and to have enough excess to go underneath the table top.

Place the cut fabric face down on a flat surface. Place the batting on top of the fabric. Turn the coffee table upside down in the center of the batting.

Fold the fabric on one side of the table over the edge and staple it to the underside of the coffee table. Begin stapling in the middle and work your way out to either side so that it is easier to keep the fabric in place. Continue stapling the fabric to the underside of the table top until it is all secure. Cut away any excess fabric and batting. Flip your table over and enjoy your ottoman.
