How to Arrange Accessories for a Square Coffee Table

How to Arrange Accessories for a Square Coffee Table

While coffee tables are one of the most common types of furniture found in a typical home, they may be one of the most overlooked in terms of decorating. Square coffee tables are popular because they fit well between furniture pieces and lend a symmetrical anchor for the room. Coffee tables can serve as a place to put books, magazines, drinks and snacks, but they also tend to become cluttered. Accessories for a coffee table should help keep the coffee table clutter free, accent the table and tie into your overall room decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Keep your accessories toward the middle of the table to put function and convenience first. A coffee table serves a functional purpose, and if your decor interferes with that purpose, you will soon grow tired of it. Leave plenty of space around the edges of the square to set down coasters, glasses, mugs and small dishes if you plan to entertain guests.

    2

Use odd -numbered groupings. Groups of three and five are most appealing to the eye and will offer a contrast to a square table with its four even sides. When choosing any accessory, such as candles, baskets, tins, bowls or vases, consider placing it in multiples.

    3

Vary heights to break up the symmetrical square appearance. Create visual interest by combining different heights, shapes and textures. Try placing something decorative on a stack of leather-bound books or under a glass bell jar. Combine a low tray with a tall vase, or put your favorite accessory on a pedestal cake stand.

    4

Double up fashion and function by using accessories that also serve as storage. Look for decorative boxes and containers, glass jars or baskets. This keeps clutter contained while accessorizing.

    5

Don't crowd the table. Less is more when it comes to accessorizing a coffee table. Too many things just make it look cluttered, so stick to only a few pieces that somehow coordinate by color, style or theme.
