How to Build a Country Wood Bench Table

How to Build a Country Wood Bench Table

Country wood bench tables are found throughout many New England farmhouses. They have stood the test of time and show wear from the many years, sometimes generations, of use. You do not have to live in a farmhouse to enjoy the pleasures of cooking and dining at one of these tables. The rustic appeal of the country wood bench table will accent even the most contemporary homes. These tables can add character and warmth to an otherwise sterile room. A hand-built table is even better because it can be customized to the builder's needs.

Instructions

    1

Place the 3-by-48-by-72-inch slab upside down on the work surface. This is the table top. Set one of the 3-by-3-by-48-inch posts on the table top. This is used as a center support. Use a tape measure to center the support lengthwise on the table top. Use a screw gun and 3 1/2-inch wood screws to fasten the center support to the table top.

    2

Set each of the 3-by-3-by-36-inch posts on either end of the center support. These are end supports. They should be perpendicular to the center support. Use a tape measure to center them on the center support. Use a screw gun and 3 1/2-inch wood screws to fasten the end supports to the center support of the table top.

    3

Set each of the 2-by-12-by-32-inch boards on either end of the end supports. These are the trestle legs. They should butt up against the end supports. Use a tape measure to center the legs on the end supports. Use a screw gun and 3 1/2-inch wood screws to fasten the legs to the end supports.

    4

Position the other 3-by-3-by-48-inch center support between the top of the trestle legs. Hold the support in place and use a screw gun and 3 1/2-inch wood screws to fasten the bottom center support to the trestle legs.

    5

Place the 3-by-3-by-38-inch posts on top of the trestle legs. These are the trestle feet. Use a tape measure to center the feet on the legs. Use a screw gun and 3 1/2-inch wood screws to fasten the feet to the legs.

    6

Apply a wood finish of your choice to the country wood bench table. Follow the directions provided with the wood finish. Allow the finish to fully dry before using the table.
