How to Transfer JavaScript HTML Table Data to Excel

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application that stores data of nearly any kind in a columnar grid. You can add data to a spreadsheet manually, by typing or pasting it into the cells, or you can import data from other sources. JavaScript and HTML are languages that create and format Web pages. They often structure "tables" on websites, which are also columnar grids that can contain nearly any type of data. You can transfer the data from one of these Web page tables into an Excel spreadsheet using a tool built into the Excel program.

Instructions

Open the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that will contain the transferred data from the Web page table.

Click the "Data" tab on the Excel ribbon toolbar.

Click on the "Get External Data" group on the Data tab.

Click the "From Web" option. A pop-up box will appear titled "New Web Query."

Type the URL for the Web page that contains the table data you wish to transfer into Excel. You can also copy the URL from any Web browser and paste it into this field, if desired. Then click the "Go" button. The window will surf to the Web page just as if you were in a Web browser program.

View the small yellow squares that appear all over the Web page in the Web Query window. They include a small black arrow inside the square. These identify sections of the Web page that correspond to JavaScript or HTML tables structured in a columnar grid. You can transfer data only if it displays this yellow icon in its upper left corner.

Click on the yellow square icon next to any table you wish to transfer into Excel. If you wish to transfer the entire Web page, click the yellow square at the top left of the page, if it exists.

Click the "OK" button. Excel automatically transfers the selected table and all its contents into the spreadsheet.
