Long Foyer Ideas

The foyer is the first impression of your home, so you want to make it count. A long foyer serves as a transitional space between the door and the next room. Design the space as its own separate room for more impact. Brighter colors keep it cheerful while properly proportioned furniture keeps it functional. Does this Spark an idea?

Lighting

Bring more lighting into the foyer. If there are windows, dress them with sheer curtains or caf curtains that allow you privacy from neighbors peeking in but still let the sunlight into the room. A chandelier brings both drama and lighting into the foyer, or install a couple of wall sconces, evenly spaced, on the walls. Track lighting or recessed canned lights run above on the ceiling for overhead light. Several LED candles flicker against the walls when placed on shelves or entryway tables.

Furniture

Furniture in the foyer assists in carrying out the tasks associated with the foyer. A table gives you a place to set the bags and packages as you enter the home while a bench or chair allows you to sit down and take off those wet boots. A clothes tree provides a place to hang the wet coat or backpacks that kids bring in after school. A combination magazine and umbrella rack takes wet umbrellas and provides storage as does a vertical cabinet with doors that contain a storage bin or shelf for each family member.

Wall Dcor

A full-length mirror allows a quick check before inviting guests in or walking out to go. It also shines the window light around the room, brightening up the area. Vertical shelves provide space to showcase a collection of decorative items, such as depression glass, music boxes or baseball cards. Or use the space as a shrine for your favorite sport team by placing team jerseys and pennants on the wall. Family photographs sit on the entry table or can create a memory wall design when grouped together on a wall.

Accessories

A fresh cut flower arrangement on a table wafts a sweet smell throughout the room while plants bring life into your foyer. Hang them from the ceiling on shelves, or place them in pots on the table. A colorful patterned rug runs from the door into the next room, tying in the colors of both rooms. A glass bowl holds a collection of seashells, or stack a rock collection into a small curio cabinet and hang it from the wall.
