How to Decorate a Small Foyer

How to Decorate a Small Foyer

In addition to serving as the official welcoming point of a home, a small foyer is also one of the most functional rooms in the house. Although it may be small in size, it doesn't have to come up short on style or fulfilling its purpose. Whether you have a traditional or modern decor, you can selectively and purposefully decorate this space to make it more functional and complement the rest of your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Choose a color that reflects the room's intended style or overall mood. Select white for a breezy, clean look or deep red to complement an Asian feel. Brighten up a small foyer with a yellow hue. Consider the color palette of adjoining or neighboring rooms to create a complementary or cohesive look. Use wallpaper, alternatively, to relay or support a theme.

    2

Decide on the function of your entryway. A small foyer can welcome family and guests or serve as a place to remove weather gear -- or both. Select properly-scaled furniture pieces and accents to accomplish the goals. Place a basket for umbrellas in the corner, for example, and small wooden boxes for keys and mail on a small table. Hang jackets on a small, free-standing coat rack.

    3

Place an armless chair, rather than a long bench, to provide enough seating for one person. Use a small, round table to hold baskets and other accessories, rather than a rectangular-shaped table. Dress the floor with a hooked rug while incorporating natural tones in other pieces for a rustic look. Create a neoclassical look with marble floors and a small marble urn or two.

    4

Place a small vase of flowers or branches to add a personal and natural touch to your small foyer. Incorporate other decorative items such as pictures, candles and sculptures in groups of three, but no more, to avoid a cluttered look.

    5

Incorporate lighting in the foyer with the use of sconces or a small lamp on a round table.
